Adjustment Disorders: what is dysthymic disorder?
Dysthymic disorder is a severe type of depression. Whilst it is extreme, such mood disorder causes long-term dispiritedness. With dysthymic disorder, your life is invaded by low, dark dispositions daily for two years or more. Dysthymia is compared with a complete major depressive episode that lasts more or two years, that is called permanent major depression.
Dysthymic disorder may occur with mood disorders or other psychiatric. This mood disorder will appear as a predecessor of major depression.
Dysthymic disorder affects up to 5% of the general public. But its cause isn't well understood. A mix of variables probably agree to create this mood disorder.
These variables may include:
- Mental processing is involved in by abnormalities in the function of brain circuits
- Chronic stress or medical disease
- Bad coping strategies and difficulties adapting to life pressures
These variables can feed off with each other. For example, if you always see that "the glass is half empty," you may augment the symptoms of melancholy. And a long-term mood disorder can sensitize you to worry feeding your risk for depression.
Along with low dispositions that are long-term, common symptoms of this mood disorder include:
- Permanent feeling of helplessness or hopelessness
- Poor self esteem
- Problems with concentration and making choices
Whereas some symptoms can overlap, you may be less likely to have sleep or weight changes with dysthymic disorder than with depression. It's also possible to remove more and have more powerful feelings of inadequacy and pessimism than with major depression.
Remaining in a continuous state of moodiness isn't a way to live. Other is that dysthymic disorder can also raise your risk for ailments that are physical. This mood sickness can grow into more serious depression if left without treatment. Additionally, it may raise risk of commiting suicide.
